Have you ever wondered, how much is a wedding cake? I wish I could give a simple, “you can expect to spend between $x-$x” but it’s a little more complicated than that. below i address the top 3 factors that determine your wedding cake investment.
The first indicator of your wedding cake price will be the size. Are you thinking a 3 tiered cake to serve 100+, or something more intimate? Or maybe you’ve considered a simple two tiered wedding cake, with additional kitchen cakes to serve to your guests. Most cake artists, including myself, have a base wedding cake price for each cake size to help you know where our wedding cake pricing begins. This gives a general idea when considering your cake budget.
2 Tiered Modern Wedding Cake
The second indicator, and the one that can create the largest investment discrepancy is the cake design. Despite two wedding cakes being the size, one may cost twice, or even three times the price of the other because of a complex design. A few details that will require a larger investment include things such as detailed fondant work, handmade sugar or wafer paper flowers, ruffles, etc. The more time spent, the higher the price of the wedding cake.
The last factor to keep in mind is your wedding venue location and setup time. Delivery can add up, but I will say, wedding cake delivery is not for the faint of heart. Even the most seasoned cake artists can run into problems when delivering wedding cakes, which is why most cake artists will require delivery with any tiered wedding cake. Some cake artists have set delivery fees where others calculate the delivery fee according to distance traveled and time spent. I use the latter formula. Set up can also be time consuming, depending if fresh florals plan to be placed on the wedding cake. Between delivering and setting up, you should expect some additional charge.
So you see, it’s not so simple answering the question, “How much are wedding cakes?”
